From Bob Allen’s article entitled Former SBC Officer Prayed for Abortion Doctor’s Death; Now Praying Same for Obama (Associated Baptist Press):
Later, Drake told Fox News Radio’s Alan Colmes he also is praying “imprecatory prayer” against President Obama.
When Drake was discussing praying for Tiller’s death, he was asked if there were others for whom he was offering “imprecatory prayer.”
Drake hesitated before answering that there are several. “The usurper that is in the White House is one—B. Hussein Obama,” he said.
Later in the interview, Colmes returned to Drake’s answer to make sure he heard him right.
“Are you praying for his death?” Colmes asked.
“Yes,” Drake replied.
“So, you’re praying for the death of the president of the United States?”
“Yes.”
Colmes asked Drake if he was concerned that by saying that he might be placed on a Secret Service or FBI watch list, and if he believed it appropriate to talk or pray that way.
“I think it’s appropriate to pray the Word of God,” Drake said. “I’m not saying anything. What I am doing is repeating what God is saying, and if that puts me on somebody’s list, then I’ll just have to be on their list.”
“You would like for the president of the United States to die?” Colmes asked once more.
“If he does not turn to God and does not turn his life around, I am asking God to enforce imprecatory prayers that are throughout the Scripture that would cause him death, that’s correct,” Drake said.

Wiley is a kook. He’s a nutcase. But this is dangerous talk and Wiley’s words have made him a dangerous man. He’s a traitor, a first-class traitor.
In just a couple of weeks – June 23-24 – Wiley Drake will show up to the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention as a messenger from the church which he serves as he’s done year after year after year. Undoubtedly, Wiley will step to the microphone and make a motion or two or three.
If Southern Baptist messengers have any integrity and actually give a hoot about their public image, someone will step to a microphone and denounce their former Vice-President and his treasonous talk.
If Southern Baptist messengers have any decency and respect for their government, someone will make a motion to unseat messengers from Wiley Drake’s First Southern Baptist Church of Buena Park, California. Surely if Southern Baptist messengers are willing to decide that they can’t tolerate the presence of messengers from a Southern Baptist congregation with a handful of gay members, they’ll have the guts to declare that they will not tolerate messengers who publicly announce that they are praying for the death of our nation’s President.
For far too long, Southern Baptist leaders have ignored their former Vice-President. But the Convention made Wiley Drake. They elected him to be the Vice-President of the largest Protestant denomination in the United States. This position gave him credibility with the media and with grassroots activists. And now it’s time for Southern Baptists to speak up, denounce Wiley Drake and unseat him as a messenger.
Wiley Drake is an embarassment to all Baptists, an embarrassment to all Christians and an embarassment to all Americans.

This guy needs to be put where he won’t hurt himself, us or the President. He, obviously, has a serious problem. In Georgia, we’d say, “send him to Milledgeville.” The BDW will know what that means.
I had to go and read the ABP article. I can’t believe that he actually said this and would repeat it. He’s just one of the many examples I’m not associated with the SBC anymore.
On another note, I heard you are going to be at CBF. Hope we have a chance to meet– we have a mutual friend– who also just performed your wedding ceremony! Congrats, I heard it was beautiful!
The most theological wedding I have ever been at. And a great pairing. Of course, I am the father of the bride!
Congrats on the wedding! I want to tread lightly on legal remedies to people like Wiley. Free speech is important–even when traitorous unless it incites to violence in an imminent way. But we do want to expose these kooks and make them pariahs. We want to use our free speech to expose the dangers of the uses to which they are putting theirs.
I’d be glad to step to a microphone and make that motion if I were going to be there. Unfortunately, this is the first year I’ve had to miss for a while. But if someone doesn’t do it this time around, I’ll be glad to do it in Orlando next summer, Lord willing.
It shouldn’t be acceptable that “kooks” and “nutcases” always seem to represent Baptists in the media! Not only is it nutty, but it’s also unpatriotic (which many in the SBC have called me during the Bush administration) and it’s incredibly racist.
The more I think about this, the angrier I become. Drake and the other SBC and Religious Right leaders insisted on the Christian Duty (Romans 13; I Peter) to pray for political leaders–and applied that to Bush. When I and others asked if we should pray that Bush repent of his warmongering, torture, indefinite detention, lawbreaking, lying, etc., these “Christian patriots” were incensed! None of that was true and all we could offer were fawning prayers of ABSOLUTE SUPPORT with no reservations. Now, Drake has the chutzpah and blasphemy to defame prayer by praying for someone’s DEATH! That should be considered blasphemous (a reason to revoke his ordination if Baptists did that) no matter whom was the target of such an “imprecatory prayer.” It is far worse that he disrespects the democratic process and the rule of law so far as to pray for the death of the President of the United States!
No matter how angry I was at George W. Bush, it would NEVER have ocurred to me to pray for his death, brag about it, and recommend others to do so. Disgusting beyond words.
Michael,
It probably never did occur to 99% of liberals, but it did occur to a lot of them:

There are dozens of other examples I could point to, all of which are more disturbing than imprecatory praying. Did you ever express your outrage at any of this? If so, please detail how you did so during the Bush years.
There should be universal repudiation and outrage at any of this kind of talk or incitement, whether conducted by right or left wing kooks.

Their silence IS telling.
And it speaks very loudly indeed.
