lee,

Sure, there's a big difference for politicians--a hypocritical one.

I don't expect politicians to put principles before politics in making policies--being the pragmatists they must be--but I do expect God-called pastors to be above rationalizing moral principles for political expediency.

All killing of innocents should be against the law.

It's all about context.

I'll bet, if I gave it the effort of a college sophomore "B" student, I could find all kinds of examples of things said from pulpits of predominantly caucasian, Southern Baptist congregations decrying the moral condition of America and saying essentially the same thing. The one big difference is that none of them have a prominent member running for President of the US on the Democratic ticket.

And I've heard plenty of things from a lot of white, middle class Republicans in recent days which demonstrate that they clearly do not have any depth of understanding of the struggles that African Americans have faced in the past, and continue to face, in this country, and do not see that as anything "evil." That's still, today, right now, in 2008. As a white American male, I will never be able to relate to the kind of treatment that African Americans and as a result, I am not in any position, nor will I ever be, to judge. McCain's campaign would be very, very wise to leave this alone. Should Obama become the Democratic nominee, using this would virtually guarantee his election.

You'll not catch Fox News playing the whole sermon, will you? Especially since, in context, it more or less confirms Obama's position, as well as the way he handled it. Some of Wright's other remarks, the conspiracy theories about the government promoting drug abuse among African Americans, and seeding the black community with the AIDS virus, are pretty well out there in left field, but they are no more paranoid, in terms of their content, than some of the stuff that circulates in the caucasian Christian community, especially among its more fundamentalist elements.

Big difference, Cat's Dad, between being against the practice of abortion, but being for overturning Roe v. Wade. Even GWB isn't for that, nor are either of his two supreme court nominees. McCain isn't for that either.
