Surprise, Surprise, Surprise! Dr. Land is not the devil you moderates have made him out to be. He is an intellectual who loves the Lord and cares about social and moral issues. He has been a bright light in the arena of moral debate.

The blind contempt that moderates have of the ERLC and Dr. Land is unfortunate. You can disagree about what happened when the SBC defunded the BJC but Dr. Land has done a great job in leading Southern Baptists in ethics and moral issues. I am one Southern Baptist pastor who is proud of the ERLC and grateful we have a leader like Dr. Land.

And I thought it was only those funny-damn-mentalists that were narrow-minded and judgmental. Maybe moderates can learn something about Dr. Land for themselves instead of getting their talking points from the likes of Bruce Prescott.

This is off topic, but how is your dad doing with his cancer treatments? My husband was in his class at BPC and was curious about how things were going...

It's interesting to see Land taking a more conciliatory tone lately. I've always been of the opinion that he knew better - that his knowledge of Baptist history and of how closely aligned the SBC became with the Bush administration and the Iraq war had to be in tension in his mind.

Who knows what his motivation is? I read something on a blog recently (unfortunately I can't remember where - maybe Talk2Action?) that suggested that Land may be positioning himself for another leadership role in the future. But as he pointed out on Colbert, he's got a pretty good deal going with the ERLC.

You raise an interesting question, though, which is whether moderates are more interested in addressing questions of applied ethics in public life through a denominational (in the very broad sense that the BJC is "Baptist") mechanism than are conservatives. I just don't know enough to know.

Interesting video. I can't believe he actually went on there. Good for him. It shows he has a sense of humor.

Actually, I've been pleased with much of what Land has said of late. Also, I wouldn't call RC a cult. They have additional teaching but I believe there are many Christians in their church.
